Metallica blacklist has dropped and it is generating the ooze! The new album/concept has made Metallica relevant again in the mainstream media much like when the original stormed the scenes in 1991. Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, and the list goes on. That was the time metalheads and mainstream music lovers, all slept with one eye open!! And, who can forget the riot they caused in Moscow for a smashing follow-up.

But, let’s take the entire concept and break it down into 4 bullets\M/

a) It is a Cover Album

This is a fact. Recently, some of my pals thought it to be a sequel to the 1991 masterpiece OR controversial album. Now, there are 100+ covers of Metallica songs scattered across various genres and formats and the reason is simple, THEY ARE BIG. It just got spicier not for innovation but for big names in the cast. Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Royal Blood, and Weezer to name a few. So, what’s in for the taking: Crossing boundaries for newer heights.

b) The BLACK album defines Metallica

Technically speaking Metallica defined themselves by their debut album ‘Kill Em All’, and more significantly by ‘Master Of Puppets’, but for someone who thinks shredding is a sin and double bass drums a non-sense, then the album is the pizza with extra cheese. For Metalheads it is..

c) Staying in the news

This is where I think Metallica is pretty good at. Every year or two you’ll find Metallica coming up with something which either may astonish you or make you wonder “What was that?”. For e.g. Everyone remembers St. Anger for all the wrong reasons and Lars’ snare drums..LOL!! It is also not to be forgotten they played in Antarctica, of all places. So, it is just a new trick that paid off pretty well.

d) It is Sweet and Sour

The array of artists covering the songs makes it a “The Memory Remains”, experience. Now, I’m someone who really believes in the evolution of musicians and trying something different. It is just that we can’t always be ‘MEHHTTAALLHA’, so the entire journey of the album has its own taste and takes you for a ‘Whiskey In the Jar’, than a ‘Damage Inc.’, ride.

So, I suggest don’t be picky and let’s respect the artistry..
